Coast to Red Lights Instead of Braking Late

The Problem

You accelerate until the last moment then brake hard at red lights. Wasted momentum = wasted gas.

The Hack

When you see a red light, stop sign, or slow traffic ahead, take your foot off the gas and coast. Let the car's momentum carry you to the stop. Brake gently at the end.

Why It Works

Accelerating requires fuel. Braking converts that fuel energy into waste heat. Coasting uses the energy you already paid for to cover distance for free. Every coast is free distance traveled.

Pro Tips

  • Anticipate stops — look 10-15 seconds ahead
  • The longer you coast, the more fuel you save
  • Traffic often clears while you coast — avoiding a complete stop
  • Also reduces brake wear, saving $200-400 over brake pad life
