Use Overdrive on Highways for Lower RPM

The Problem

Your car revs at 3,000+ RPM on the highway. Higher RPM = more fuel consumption.

The Hack

Ensure overdrive is enabled (most automatics have it on by default). Some cars have an 'O/D Off' button — make sure it's NOT pressed. Manual cars: use the highest gear comfortable for the speed.

Why It Works

Lower RPM means fewer combustion cycles per mile, using less fuel. Overdrive gears have ratios that keep RPM low at cruising speed while maintaining vehicle speed.

Pro Tips

  • Most automatics have overdrive on by default — check for 'O/D Off' button
  • Manual cars: shift to highest gear as soon as speed allows
  • RPM at 2,000-2,500 on the highway is ideal for most cars
  • Some CVT transmissions optimize this automatically
