Check Your Coolant Level to Prevent Overheating

The Problem

Your temperature gauge spikes. Engine overheats. Head gasket blows = $3,000+ repair.

The Hack

With engine COLD, locate the coolant reservoir (translucent tank near the radiator). Fluid should be between MIN and MAX marks. If low, add 50/50 coolant mix. Never open the radiator cap when hot.

Why It Works

Coolant circulates through the engine absorbing heat. Low coolant means the engine can't cool itself, leading to overheating. Catching low levels early prevents catastrophic and expensive engine damage.

Pro Tips

  • NEVER open the radiator cap on a hot engine — pressurized steam causes burns
  • Check the reservoir level, not the radiator directly
  • Top off with 50/50 pre-mixed coolant (same color as existing)
  • If level drops repeatedly, you may have a leak — see a mechanic
