Check Your Oil in 2 Minutes with the Dipstick

The Problem

You have no idea what your oil level is between oil changes. Low oil kills engines.

The Hack

Park on level ground, wait 5 min after driving. Pull dipstick, wipe with a rag, reinsert fully, pull again. Oil should be between the two marks. Color should be amber — dark black means it's due for a change.

Why It Works

Oil lubricates and cools your engine's moving parts. Running low causes metal-on-metal friction and overheating. Checking monthly catches leaks and consumption before they cause damage.

Pro Tips

  • Check monthly — takes literally 2 minutes
  • Oil between the two marks = good. Below low mark = add oil immediately
  • Amber/honey color = fresh. Dark brown/black = time for a change
  • If oil level drops quickly between checks, you may have a leak — see a mechanic
