The 3-Second Following Distance Rule
The Problem
You follow too closely. Tailgating gives you zero reaction time if the car ahead brakes suddenly.
The Hack
Watch the car ahead pass a fixed point (sign, bridge, shadow). Count three seconds. If you reach that point before three seconds, increase your following distance.
Why It Works
At 60 mph, you travel 88 feet per second. Human reaction time is 1.5 seconds. Three seconds gives you 264 feet — enough to perceive, react, and stop in most conditions.
Pro Tips
- 3 seconds minimum in dry conditions
- 4-5 seconds in rain, fog, or night driving
- 6+ seconds in snow and ice
- Tailgating saves almost zero time but massively increases crash risk
