Microplane Grater vs Box Grater: When to Use Each

The Problem

You're using a box grater for everything, including garlic (which smashes) and zesting (which wastes peel).

The Hack

Microplane ($12): citrus zest, ginger, garlic, hard cheese (parmesan), nutmeg. Box grater ($10): cheddar cheese, carrots, potatoes, butter. Right tool, right job.

Why It Works

A microplane's razor-sharp tiny blades create a fine powder that melts into food. A box grater's larger holes create shreds and strips for texture and volume.

Pro Tips

  • A microplane makes garlic paste in seconds without a garlic press
  • For zesting, only grate the colored part — the white pith underneath is bitter
  • Freeze your box grater 10 min before grating soft cheese — it won't clump
  • Both are dishwasher safe but hand washing extends their sharpness
