Put a Trash Can in Every Room

The Problem

Trash accumulates on nightstands, desks, and counters because the nearest trash can is in the kitchen.

The Hack

Buy small trash cans ($3-5 each at Dollar Tree or Walmart) for: each bedroom, bathrooms, home office, and living room. Line with grocery bags.

Why It Works

Convenience determines behavior. If a trash can is within arm's reach, trash goes in it. If it requires walking to the kitchen, trash gets set down on the nearest surface and stays there.

Pro Tips

  • Small 2-gallon cans are plenty for most rooms
  • Line with grocery store bags — free liners
  • Empty during the evening tidy routine
  • This prevents 80% of random surface clutter
