Hands at 9 and 3 O'Clock — Not 10 and 2

The Problem

You hold the wheel at 10 and 2 because that's what you learned in driving school 20 years ago.

The Hack

Place hands at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock (horizontal, not angled up). This gives maximum control and keeps hands clear of the airbag deployment zone.

Why It Works

Airbags deploy from the steering wheel center. At 10-and-2, your arms are in the deployment path — the airbag can slam your hands into your face causing fractures. At 9-and-3, arms are outside the blast zone.

Pro Tips

  • NHTSA updated this recommendation years ago
  • 9-and-3 also gives better leverage for emergency swerving
  • Never drive with one hand at 12 o'clock — arm gets broken by airbag
  • Keep thumbs on the rim, not wrapped around — same airbag reason
