Check Coolant Strength Before Summer and Winter

The Problem

Your coolant hasn't been checked in years. It may not protect against freezing or overheating.

The Hack

Buy a $5 coolant tester (hydrometer). Draw coolant from the reservoir. The tester shows the freeze point and boil point. Should protect to at least -34°F and 265°F.

Why It Works

Coolant is a mix of antifreeze and water. Over time, the ratio shifts as water is added. Too diluted: freezes in winter. Too concentrated: doesn't transfer heat in summer. The correct 50/50 ratio protects against both.

Pro Tips

  • 50/50 premixed coolant is easiest — pour straight in
  • Coolant tester: $5 at any auto parts store
  • Check annually — fall is ideal timing
  • Coolant should be changed every 30,000-60,000 miles
