Wax Your Car Before Winter for Salt Protection

The Problem

Road salt and brine eat through clear coat and cause rust. You wash the car but the damage is already happening.

The Hack

Apply a wax or sealant in October/November before winter. This creates a sacrificial barrier that protects paint from salt, brine, and chemical deicers throughout the winter months.

Why It Works

Road salt is corrosive — it attacks clear coat and bare metal. Wax creates a physical barrier between salt-laden road spray and your paint. Without it, salt sits on paint and accelerates oxidation.

Pro Tips

  • Apply in late fall before salt season starts
  • Spray sealant (Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions) is easiest — spray on, wipe off
  • Wash your car regularly in winter to remove salt accumulation
  • Pay special attention to wheel wells and lower panels
