Clean Your Washing Machine Monthly

The Problem

Your washing machine smells musty. Clean clothes come out smelling slightly off. Front-loaders are especially prone to mildew.

The Hack

Run an empty hot water cycle with 2 cups white vinegar. Wipe the rubber door gasket with vinegar on a cloth. Leave the door open between uses.

Why It Works

Moisture and detergent residue create an environment for mildew and bacteria. Hot water and vinegar kill mildew and dissolve soap buildup.

Pro Tips

  • Front-loaders: wipe the door gasket after EVERY load
  • Leave the door and detergent drawer open between loads
  • Use HE detergent in HE machines — regular creates excess suds
  • Monthly cleaning prevents the dreaded 'washer smell'
