Stop a Rocking Toilet with Shims

The Problem

Toilet rocks side to side — this movement breaks the wax seal and causes leaks.

The Hack

Slide plastic shims under base until stable. Trim excess with utility knife. Caulk around base.

Why It Works

Uneven floors cause rocking that breaks the wax ring. Shims fill the gap, caulk locks it.

Pro Tips

  • Use plastic shims — wood rots in moisture
  • Don't overtighten bolts — cracks porcelain
  • Caulk for a clean finished look
  • If base leaks, wax ring needs replacing too ($5)
