Peel Garlic in 10 Seconds by Shaking in a Jar

The Problem

Peeling garlic clove by clove is slow and your fingers smell for hours.

The Hack

Smash the garlic bulb to separate cloves. Drop unpeeled cloves into a mason jar or any hard container with a lid. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Skins fall off.

Why It Works

The violent shaking causes the papery skin to separate from the clove due to the rapid impact forces. Cloves bounce off each other and the jar walls, mechanically stripping the skins.

Pro Tips

  • Works with any hard container with a lid — tupperware, cocktail shaker, two bowls pressed together
  • More cloves = better results — the cloves help peel each other
  • Some cloves may need a second round of shaking
  • Skin goes right into the compost, cloves are ready to mince
