Soften Butter Fast with a Warm Glass
The Problem
Recipe calls for room temperature butter. Yours is a cold brick from the fridge. Microwaving melts it unevenly.
The Hack
Fill a drinking glass with hot (not boiling) water. Let it sit 1 minute to warm the glass. Dump the water, dry the glass, and place it upside-down over the cold butter.
Why It Works
The warm glass creates a mini greenhouse effect, gently and evenly raising the butter temperature without melting it. The trapped warm air softens from all sides simultaneously.
Pro Tips
- The butter should yield to a finger press but not be shiny or greasy
- Takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how cold the butter was
- Works better than the microwave because it softens evenly
- Cut butter into small cubes first for even faster softening
