Peel Ginger with a Spoon Instead of a Knife

The Problem

Peeling ginger with a knife or peeler wastes a huge amount of ginger flesh on the knobby curves.

The Hack

Hold the ginger in one hand and scrape the edge of a spoon against the skin. It peels right off, following every bump and curve.

Why It Works

Ginger skin is very thin and loosely attached. A spoon edge has the perfect combination of dullness (won't cut the flesh) and rigidity (enough pressure to lift the skin).

Pro Tips

  • Works better than any vegetable peeler made
  • Gets into all the nooks and knobs that a knife misses
  • The more you use the ginger, the easier the remaining pieces are to peel
  • Or just freeze and grate — no peeling needed
