Use Dental Floss to Cut Soft Foods Perfectly

The Problem

Knives drag through soft foods, squishing them. Cake layers tear, cheese crumbles, cinnamon rolls flatten.

The Hack

Slide a piece of unflavored, unwaxed dental floss under the food. Cross the ends over the top and pull in opposite directions. Clean, perfect cut.

Why It Works

The thin floss creates less surface friction than a knife blade, slicing through soft foods without compressing them. The crossover pull motion cuts evenly from all sides simultaneously.

Pro Tips

  • MUST be unflavored — mint-flavored floss will flavor your food
  • Perfect for goat cheese, brie, mozzarella, and cheesecake
  • For cinnamon rolls, slide floss under the log and pull to slice identical rounds
  • Also works for cutting hard-boiled eggs without a yolk crumble
