Keep Your Gas Tank Above Half Full in Winter

The Problem

Your car runs out of gas in a blizzard. Or condensation freezes in the fuel line and the engine won't start.

The Hack

In winter, refuel at the half-tank mark instead of waiting until near-empty.

Why It Works

Empty tank space fills with air that contains moisture. In freezing temperatures, this moisture condenses and can freeze in fuel lines. A fuller tank also provides engine heat if stranded in a storm.

Pro Tips

  • Half-tank minimum in winter — always
  • If stranded: run the engine 10 min on, 10 off to conserve fuel while staying warm
  • Condensation in fuel lines causes no-start on cold mornings
  • Also: you're never far from a refill in case of detours or closures
