Use Rubber Floor Mats in Winter to Protect Carpet

The Problem

Snow and salt-soaked boots destroy your car's carpet floor mats. The smell is terrible by March.

The Hack

Swap to all-weather rubber floor mats (WeatherTech, Husky, or Amazon basics) in November. Remove carpet mats and store them clean. Rubber mats contain all the winter muck.

Why It Works

Salt and moisture trapped in carpet mats cause mold, odor, and accelerated rust of the floor pan. Rubber mats contain moisture in raised channels and are simply rinsed clean.

Pro Tips

  • WeatherTech or Husky: $60-120 for a full set, custom fit
  • Amazon basics: $30-40, universal fit
  • Rinse rubber mats with a hose — 30 seconds to clean
  • Your carpet mats stay pristine through winter storage
