Caulk Windows and Doors to Stop Air Leaks

The Problem

Air leaks around windows and doors make your HVAC work harder. You can feel drafts on windy days.

The Hack

Hold a lit incense stick near window and door frames. Where smoke wavers, there's a leak. Apply a thin bead of silicone or latex caulk along the gap.

Why It Works

Even small gaps add up. A 1/16 inch gap around a door frame lets in as much air as having a window half open. Caulk creates an airtight seal.

Pro Tips

  • Silicone caulk lasts longest but can't be painted
  • Paintable latex caulk is easier to work with for beginners
  • Do both interior and exterior gaps
  • One $5 tube seals most gaps in an average home
