Seal Driveway Cracks Before Winter

The Problem

Small driveway cracks let water in. Water freezes, expands, and makes cracks bigger every winter.

The Hack

Clean cracks with a wire brush. Apply rubberized asphalt crack filler ($8 at Home Depot) with the squeeze bottle applicator. Let cure 24 hours.

Why It Works

Water enters cracks and freezes, expanding 9% and widening the crack each cycle. Sealing prevents water entry, stopping the freeze-thaw cycle.

Pro Tips

  • Best done in fall before first freeze
  • Clean out grass and debris from cracks first
  • Rubberized filler stays flexible in cold weather
  • Seal the whole driveway every 3-5 years for maximum life
