Clean AC Condenser Coils for Better Cooling

The Problem

Your AC runs constantly but doesn't cool well. The outdoor unit's coils are clogged with dirt, grass, and debris.

The Hack

Turn off AC power. Remove any debris around the outdoor unit. Gently hose the coils from inside out (not high pressure) until water runs clean through the fins.

Why It Works

Dirty condenser coils can't release heat efficiently, forcing the compressor to work harder and longer. Clean coils restore designed efficiency.

Pro Tips

  • Do this every spring before heavy AC use
  • Keep 2 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit — trim bushes and grass
  • Bent fins can be straightened with a cheap fin comb ($8)
  • This single task can reduce AC energy use by 15-25%
