Wrap Pipes with Foam Insulation Before Winter

The Problem

Exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and garages are vulnerable to freezing and burst.

The Hack

Buy foam pipe insulation tubes ($1-2 each at Home Depot). Split lengthwise if not pre-split. Wrap around exposed pipes. Tape seams.

Why It Works

Foam insulation keeps pipe temperature above freezing and reduces heat loss from hot water pipes by up to 40%.

Pro Tips

  • Cover every exposed pipe in unheated areas
  • Pay special attention to pipes near exterior walls
  • $10 of insulation can prevent a $2,000 burst pipe repair
  • Also saves energy on hot water lines year-round
