Flush Your Sprinkler System Before Winter

The Problem

Water left in underground sprinkler lines freezes and cracks pipes, valves, and heads. Repair costs $200-500.

The Hack

Shut off the water supply to the sprinkler system. Open the drain valves to let water flow out. For in-ground systems, use an air compressor to blow out remaining water from each zone.

Why It Works

Water expands when freezing with enough force to crack PVC pipes and brass fittings underground. Empty lines can't freeze and burst.

Pro Tips

  • Most irrigation companies charge $50-75 for a blowout
  • DIY with an air compressor if you have one (50+ PSI needed)
  • Do this before temps drop below 32°F consistently
  • Mark sprinkler heads before snowfall so you don't damage them plowing
