Test Smoke Detectors When You Change Clocks

The Problem

Dead smoke detector batteries are the #1 reason smoke detectors fail during fires. 60% of fire deaths occur in homes without working alarms.

The Hack

Press the test button on every smoke detector. If weak or no sound, replace the 9-volt battery. Replace the entire detector if it's over 10 years old.

Why It Works

Linking battery changes to clock changes (spring forward, fall back) creates a consistent twice-a-year habit that's easy to remember.

Pro Tips

  • Check the manufacture date on the back — replace units over 10 years old
  • 10-year sealed battery detectors eliminate the battery change entirely ($25)
  • You need detectors in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level
  • CO detectors need the same treatment
