Winterize Outdoor Faucets to Prevent Burst Pipes

The Problem

Outdoor faucets freeze and burst when water inside expands. Repair costs $500-2,000+.

The Hack

Disconnect and drain all garden hoses. Shut off interior valve to outdoor faucets if you have one. Install foam faucet covers ($3 each at Home Depot) on every exterior faucet.

Why It Works

Water expands 9% when freezing, generating enough pressure to burst copper and PVC pipes. Foam covers insulate against freezing temps.

Pro Tips

  • Do this before the first freeze forecast
  • Don't forget faucets on the side of the house
  • Leave inside faucets at a slight drip during extreme cold
  • Foam covers are reusable for years
