Use a Clay Bar to Remove Contaminants from Paint

The Problem

After washing, your paint still feels rough and bumpy. Industrial fallout, tree sap, and overspray are embedded.

The Hack

After washing, spray clay lubricant on a 2x2 foot section. Glide the clay bar over the surface with light pressure. Fold and knead the clay when it gets dirty. Wipe with microfiber.

Why It Works

Clay bars use a sticky polymer that bonds to and pulls out contaminants embedded IN the clear coat that washing can only remove from the surface. The result is glass-smooth paint ready for wax.

Pro Tips

  • Do the plastic bag test: run your hand over paint in a plastic bag — roughness = needs clay
  • Clay bar kits: $15-25 at any auto parts store
  • Only clay 1-2 times per year — it's mildly abrasive
  • Follow with wax or sealant to protect the freshly cleaned surface
