Wash Your Car with Two Buckets to Prevent Scratches

The Problem

You wash your car with one bucket and the same dirty water goes back on the paint, grinding dirt into the clear coat.

The Hack

Bucket 1: soapy water. Bucket 2: clean rinse water. Wash one section with the soapy mitt, rinse the mitt in the rinse bucket, reload soap from the soap bucket. Repeat for each section.

Why It Works

One-bucket washes rub captured dirt back into the paint, creating micro-scratches (swirl marks). The two-bucket method ensures the mitt is clean every time it touches the paint.

Pro Tips

  • Use a grit guard in the rinse bucket bottom — traps dirt below the water line
  • Wash from top to bottom — the bottom is dirtiest
  • Use a microfiber wash mitt — sponges trap and drag dirt
  • Rinse the car with a hose before touching it with anything
