Freeze Overripe Bananas for Smoothies and Baking

The Problem

Brown spotted bananas pile up on the counter. You feel guilty throwing them out but nobody wants to eat them.

The Hack

Peel the bananas (critical — don't freeze with peel on), break each into 2-3 pieces, place in a freezer bag. Squeeze out air, seal, and freeze flat.

Why It Works

Freezing halts the enzymatic browning process. Overripe bananas have the most sugar and flavor, making them ideal for smoothies (natural sweetener) and baking (moist texture).

Pro Tips

  • ALWAYS peel before freezing — frozen peel is impossible to remove
  • Frozen banana pieces blend smoother than whole frozen bananas
  • Overripe bananas make the best banana bread — the browner the better
  • They last 3-6 months in the freezer
