Store Mushrooms in a Paper Bag, Not Plastic

The Problem

Mushrooms turn slimy and brown in the plastic container or bag they came in within a few days.

The Hack

Transfer mushrooms to a brown paper bag. Fold the top loosely and place in the main compartment of the fridge (not the crisper).

Why It Works

Mushrooms are 90% water and release moisture as they age. Paper bags absorb this excess moisture while still allowing airflow. Plastic traps moisture and accelerates decomposition.

Pro Tips

  • Don't wash mushrooms before storing — moisture speeds decay
  • When ready to use, wipe with a damp cloth instead of rinsing
  • Keep mushrooms away from strong-smelling foods — they absorb odors
  • The brown paper lunch bags from the grocery store work perfectly
