Use Rice to Prevent Salt and Spice Clumping

The Problem

Salt turns into a solid brick. Brown sugar becomes a rock. Spices cake together. Humidity kills pantry goods.

The Hack

Put a few grains of uncooked rice directly into salt shakers, or a small cheesecloth pouch of rice into larger containers. Replace every 3-4 months.

Why It Works

Uncooked rice is a natural desiccant — it absorbs moisture from surrounding air, keeping dry goods flowing freely.

Pro Tips

  • For salt shakers, 5-6 grains are enough — too big to come through the holes
  • Works in toolboxes and camera bags too
  • For hardened brown sugar, add a slice of fresh bread overnight to soften
  • Replace rice pouches every few months as they reach absorption capacity
