Keep Brown Sugar Soft with a Marshmallow

The Problem

Brown sugar turns into an unusable brick within weeks of opening. You chisel pieces off or throw it away.

The Hack

Drop 1-2 large marshmallows into the brown sugar container or bag. Seal it up. That's it.

Why It Works

Marshmallows slowly release moisture into the container, maintaining the humidity level that keeps brown sugar soft. As the marshmallow dries, the sugar absorbs that moisture.

Pro Tips

  • Replace the marshmallow every 2-3 months when it hardens
  • A slice of bread works too but molds faster — marshmallows last way longer
  • For already-hardened sugar, microwave with a damp paper towel for 20 seconds
  • An apple slice works overnight for a quick fix but remove it by morning
