Revive Stale Bread by Running It Under Water and Baking

The Problem

Day-old bread from the bakery is hard and stale. You're about to throw it out or make croutons.

The Hack

Run the stale loaf quickly under the faucet — just a 2-second pass to dampen the surface. Place directly on the oven rack at 350°F for 5-7 minutes.

Why It Works

The water on the surface turns to steam in the oven, which re-hydrates the bread's interior. The dry oven heat simultaneously re-crisps the crust. You're essentially re-baking the bread.

Pro Tips

  • This works incredibly well on baguettes, sourdough, and ciabatta
  • Don't soak the bread — literally just a quick pass under water
  • Use within 30 minutes — the effect doesn't last long
  • For sliced bread, just toast it — this trick is for artisan loaves
