Store Avocados with Onion to Prevent Browning

The Problem

You use half an avocado and the other half is brown mush by tomorrow. Lemon juice only partially works.

The Hack

Place the cut avocado half face-down on a bed of sliced onion in an airtight container. Refrigerate.

Why It Works

Sulfur compounds released by the cut onion inhibit the enzyme (polyphenol oxidase) that causes avocado browning. Direct contact between the avocado flesh and onion surface creates a protective barrier.

Pro Tips

  • The avocado won't taste like onion — the contact is minimal
  • Leaving the pit in does almost nothing despite the popular myth
  • Red onion works best, white onion second
  • Lemon juice + onion method together is the most effective combo
