Store Tomatoes Stem-Side Down at Room Temperature

The Problem

You put tomatoes in the fridge and they become mealy and flavorless. Left on the counter they rot in days.

The Hack

Place tomatoes stem-side down on a plate or cutting board at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.

Why It Works

The stem scar is where moisture escapes and bacteria enter. Placing stem-side down seals this opening, slowing dehydration and decay. Refrigeration below 55°F breaks down flavor compounds permanently.

Pro Tips

  • Never refrigerate tomatoes unless they're about to go bad and you need 1-2 more days
  • If you must refrigerate, bring to room temp 1 hour before eating to restore some flavor
  • Cherry and grape tomatoes can be refrigerated — they're more resilient
  • Store away from bananas and other ethylene-producing fruits
